Edge banding calculator
Edge banding goes into both the quote and the cutting size. Here is how to work out the length a project needs and when banding thickness must come off the part, or let Verneer add it all up.
How much edge banding: the math
For each part add up the banded edges: two lengths, two widths or only the visible edges. Multiply by the quantity and add everything up. Allow 5 to 10% extra for trimmed ends and the edgebander.
Example: 6 shelves of 30 × 12 in banded on the front only use 6 × 30 = 180 in, 15 ft, plus the allowance, about 16.5 ft.
When to deduct banding from the cutting size
Thin banding (0.5 mm, about 0.02 in) is usually not deducted. Thick banding of 1 to 3 mm grows the part: a 720 mm side with 2 mm banding on both ends ends up 724 mm if it is not deducted before cutting.
In Verneer you mark each edge as deducted or not, and the cutting size on the plan and the label is already corrected.
What Verneer does with edge banding
- Banding per edge, with different colours and thicknesses
- Thickness deducted from the cutting size automatically
- Total banding length per type in the plan summary
- Banded edges marked on the sheet diagram and labels
- Banding cost in quotes (Pro plan)
Edge banding questions
How much extra banding should I allow?
5 to 10% on top of the total, for trimmed ends and setting up the edgebander. Small parts need a larger share.
Do I deduct thin 0.5 mm banding?
Usually not: it stays within cutting tolerance. Banding of 1 mm or more is usually deducted.
Does Verneer total the banding by colour?
Yes. The summary shows the length of each banding you set up, so you buy the right amount.
